At Princeton University, every project carries a sense of history and intention. The goal of the new Princeton University Art Museum was to create an environment where art, scholarship, and community could exist together in a cohesive and thoughtfully designed setting.

The project required thoughtful coordination and support to ensure the original design intent was carried throughout the environment. The spaces needed to feel refined and intentional, with every element supporting the architectural language without competing for attention.

BFI developed detailed drawings that helped qualify the final procurement of the specified products. These visuals allowed Princeton Facilities to evaluate options with confidence and ensure that each furnishing aligned with both the aesthetic direction and functional needs of the space. Throughout this phase, selections from the manufacturer, MillerKnoll, were carefully confirmed to align with the project’s design standards while supporting long-term durability.

The project introduced a number of  requirements that called for flexibility and problem-solving. Certain specifications required adjustments to maintain the clean and cohesive look envisioned by the design team, Princeton Facilities Office of Capital Projects Interiors Department, and the end user. BFI worked closely with stakeholders to refine these details and deliver solutions that supported both performance and appearance.

As timelines evolved, some product lead times presented challenges. BFI responded by identifying alternate options that remained consistent with the design intent, to maintain both continuity and schedule. This approach ensured progress stayed on track while preserving the integrity of the overall design.

Gallery spaces were kept open and minimal, with furnishings that remain subtle and unobtrusive. Seating was integrated in a way that supports visitors without drawing attention away from the artwork. The balance between comfort and restraint allows the collections and architecture to remain the focal point.

In areas dedicated to learning and collaboration, flexible seating and table solutions support group interaction and creative engagement. These spaces feel adaptable and welcoming, encouraging use across a range of academic and public programs. The auditorium introduces a different scale, with organized seating designed for comfort and clear visibility, supporting lectures and large gatherings.

Additional environments, including meeting rooms and administrative areas, maintain the same sense of clarity and organization. Workstations and support spaces incorporate solutions from MillerKnoll and Formaspace, creating structured yet open environments that support productivity. Outdoor and transitional spaces are enhanced with furnishings from Kettal and Fermob, extending the design language beyond the interior and reinforcing a cohesive experience throughout the building.

The completed project reflects the strength of a long-standing partnership and a shared commitment to detail. BFI’s ability to provide thoughtful planning, clear documentation, and responsive solutions helped Princeton Facilities navigate a complex and highly design-driven process.

The final environment feels cohesive, refined, and purposeful. Each space supports its intended use while contributing to a larger, unified experience. Through careful coordination and a deep understanding of the project’s goals, BFI helped bring a vision to life that will serve the Museum for years to come.
